Missouri Off the Beaten Path, 4th : A Guide to Unique Places
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (September, 1998)
Author: Patti DeLano
Average review score:

I love this series!
Having discovered the Off the Beaten Path series while planning a vacation to South Dakota, I didn't hesitate to pick up the Missouri copy to see what I was missing in my backyard. I'm really glad I did! Even though I've discovered many things since moving to Missouri, this book has helped me discover quite a few new places to explore. The book has broken Missouri into concise geographical sections, so when planning a trip, you only have to look at the section of the state where you'll be travelling. The usual topics of lodging shopping, and restaurants are covered very well, but what I find most interesting are the little-known cultural artifacts highlighted in the book. If you're planning a trip to Missouri, or live here and want to discover more of your home state, this book is highly recommended. One warning though: you'll never look at any interstate, especially I-70, the same again!!

Montana's Bob Marshall Country
A great preview of "The Bob". Very good, concise information in a very readable format. I especially liked the sections on wildlife and history. Makes you want to go to Montana tomorrow and see the country, even if it is January and you hate snow. I can hardly wait for the summer and a visit to the wild country of "The Bob".

Month-by-month Gardening In Wisconsin
Published in Paperback by Cool Springs Press (01 September, 2001)
Authors: Melinda Myers and A Thomas Nelson Company
Average review score:

Step-by-step garden guide with lots of great information
Book contains about 370 pages divided into 11 major sections. Sections are Annuals (29 pages), Bulbs (29 pages), Fruits (34 pages), Herbs and Vegetables (30 pages), Houseplants (30 pages), Lawns (26 pages), Perennials (30 pages), Roses (28 pages), Shrubs (32 pages), Trees (30 pages), and Vines & Groundcovers (30 pages).

What makes the book unique is that each section discusses the material for every month (hence the title, "month by month"). Each month contains about 2 pages of instructions for planning, planting, care, watering, fertilizer, pests, and pruning. Each section starts with several pages introducing the topic.

Example of Melinda Myers advice: Tree section (April), "Do not prune Oaks and Honeylocust once growth begins. Wait until the dormant season to avoid disease problems".

Oops, I wish I would have had this book earlier. I did prune my Oak in April a few years back, and I now have a disease problem.

Besides the great plant instructions, the books contains amazing maps of Wisconsin (page size maps with county names). Maps contain USDA Cold Hardiness, Annual Precipation, Average First Frost, and Average Last Frost. Also includes lists of crop dates, UW Extension Service addresses, dry tolerate perennials, and much much more.

This is an excellent wealth of plant tips for anyone gardening in Wisconsin. It's a must have book!

More Montana Tell Tales, Damn Lies and Otherwise
Published in Paperback by Polecat Pr (December, 1995)
Author: Dick Hoskins
Average review score:

I know the author and I know his lies are real damn lies!
I grew up with Dick Hoskins on the Flathead in western Montana. He was a year ahead of me and was one of the brightest students that ever graduated from Charlo High School. He went in the Navy and I had a agricultural deferment and later went in the Army. We both graduated from Gonzaga University in Spokane Washington in 1950. I have read both of Dicks books and think they are great. He even mentioned me in one of them. Everything he says in the books is a lie but based on true life events during the 30's and 40's I'm looking forward to the next book and may even give him some ideas to put in it.
